The New Square Drivers and Their Clones - What's the Story?
If you've been reading the golf press then chances are you'll have heard
about the latest driver technology. Yes everyone's talking about Square
Drivers although only time will tell how good they really are. In this
article we'll take a quick look at the golf technology behind these clubs
and similar square driver clones.
It's all about Moment of Inertia, or MOI for short. What's that I hear
you ask? Greater MOI in a clubhead creates a more stable golf club that
will twist less on impact for miscued golf shots. Moving weight away
from the face of the club increases MOI and hence stability giving straighter
and longer shots.
Square
Driver Clones
GigaGolf.com has unveiled their second-generation square shaped driver
appropriately called the GX
Squared Ti Driver . While the basic shape of the
driver is similar to their previous model, it is the improvements they
have made in construction, image and sound, and the performance of the
club that make this a driver to be taken seriously and not looked at
as a novelty.
You can try the GX
Squared Ti with
the comfort of GigaGolf's risk free 30-day trial period so you can discover
for yourself what this square driver technology can do for your golf
game.
Why
the Square Headed Driver?
The main reason is that the United States Golf Association has put a
limit on head size of 5 inches by 5 inches. So with only that square
boundary in which to work, manufacturers are "filling in the corners"
as it's the last place they've got to place that extra MOI generating
weight.
Who is Making Square Drivers
Nike and Callaway have made golf clubs using this methodology. Callaway's
driver is called the FT-i and Nike's is the SQ Sumo. There are not too
many pros using them although KJ Choi won an event last year with Nike
Square Driver in his bag. No signs yet that Tiger Woods will be using
the Sumo himself. There has actually been a number of concerns voiced
by professional tour players about the driver going too straight. That
would certainly be a nice concern for most of us other golfers to have!
What are People Saying?
Renowned club maker and author of Search For The Perfect Golf Club,
Tom Wishon ponders whether this new square technology is more about increasing
revenue than it is about increasing ROI. His suggestion that golfers
who already have high MOI drivers might not notice a huge difference
although, as golfers, we all know anything that offers anything straighter,
better, longer, higher, lower, faster, or whatever off the tee will be
of interest.
On the side, Golf Digest recently gave these new square drivers high
marks during their club testing exercise. The Callaway was given the
Editors Choice commendation although Nike's Sumo was also well ranked.
One of their testers commented on the "nice high ball flight" and
suggested that it might have particular appeal to higher handicap golfers.
