Review of the GX Squared Ti Driver - By Bill BaxterReview Courtesy of GigaGolf GigaGolf.com has unveiled their second-generation square shaped driver appropriately called the GX Squared Ti i. While the basic shape of the driver is similar to their previous model, it is the improvements they have made in construction, image and sound, and the performance of the club that make this a driver to be taken seriously and not looked at as a novelty. Let's take a closer look.
The shaft of choice is the UST made HDX 70. This mid torque, mid bend point shaft utilizes a high modulus graphite compound making it exceptionally playable for a wide range of players. The shaft is available in four flex categories: Light, Average (Senior), regular, and Stiff. The men’s standard length is 45 inches and for the ladies, standard length is 44 inches. At first, I was not a big fan of square shaped drivers. The first model had very sharp, angular lines that just cried out for attention. The lines of the GX Squared Ti are softer, smoother, and subtler, making it a much more pleasing club to look at. GigaGolf also improved the alignment aid on the top of the driver from an “O”, which really did not inspire confidence at address to more of an arrow design that points out exactly where you are aimed. I also like the clear coat on top allowing the player to see the carbon fiber in the reinforced crown. To me it just looks cool. The improvements to the construction and image of the club are great, but it is performance that truly defines the GX Squared Ti as the next generation of game-improvement drivers. I was given the opportunity to test the 10.5 degree model with the stiff flex version of the HDX 70. The acoustics of the GX Squared Ti are far superior to that of its predecessor. The sound at impact is more solid and less like an aluminium baseball bat that characterized previous generation square drivers. The feel of this club is solid overall regardless of where you strike it on the clubface with the most feedback coming at the extreme outer edges. The GX Squared Ti driver is designed for accuracy with the highest MOI (Moment of Inertia) of any driver GigaGolf has ever offered. If you make contact near the sweet spot, the ball will go where the club was aimed. Even shots that were hit out towards the toe and in towards the heel corrected nicely towards the middle of the fairway, certainly more than I expected. Is the GX Squared Ti the magic pill that will instantly cure your slice? Not if you have a swing that brings the club over-the-top on an outside to inside swing path. But when you are swinging the club well and miss it just a little, this club will keep you on the course. Distance is improved over the previous model because of the cup-face and VFT, but remember, this club is geared for accuracy. Center hit shots were about equal to my current driver, but the accuracy was better, a big plus in my eyes. Off center shots were shorter than those hit flush in the center but that is to be expected. The biggest difference is in the accuracy of those miss hits. With my old driver, miss hits cost me distance and accuracy, but with the GX Squared Ti, my miss hits only cost ,e some distance and I will gladly take my second shot from the fairway or first cut as opposed to the trees or deep rough. Overall, the GX Squared Ti is a great driver for the high to mid-handicap player looking to play more shots from the short grass. We pride ourselves on the eFit System, which helps the player determine the ideal length and shaft for him or her. If you have any questions, give me a call. I will be happy to recommend the best loft, shaft, and flex for you or answer any questions you have about this new product. Read about the design behind GigaGolf's KC Squared Ti Driver.
